Amazon Fire TV Mirroring How To Guide

flickr user 기태 김

In this post, we will present a how-to guide on enabling Amazon Fire TV mirroring. If you are bored of streaming or find it easier to search for content via your phone or tablet, then mirroring is for you. Screen mirroring, or screen casting, enables users to put content from the screen of one (usually smaller) device onto another device (usually a TV). Once possible only with HDMI cables and many headaches, mirroring is now very simple and is offered through many devices such as Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, and Chromecast. Here we will focus specifically on Amazon Fire TV mirroring from Android and Fire devices as well as Apple devices.

Miracast

If you own a Fire Phone and an Amazon Fire TV, then mirroring will be very simple. These devices are enabled to work with Miracast, the wireless display technology that allows mirroring to occur. Miracast is available on Amazon devices as well as Roku and Chromecast. It is not available on Apple devices and only some Android devices, but we will get to that in a minute.

Mirroring from Fire Devices

First, make sure your device and the Fire TV are within 30 feet of one another. They also need to be registered to the same Amazon account, and need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Fire Phone

To mirror your Fire Phone screen to your Fire TV:

  1. Go to Quick Actions on the phone
  2. Find Display and select Share your screen via Miracast
  3. Your Fire TV device should be displayed. Select the device and mirroring should start. (Note: it may take up to 20 seconds for mirroring to be successful)
  4. To stop mirroring, select Stop Mirroring on your phone screen.

Fire HD/HDX Tablets

Mirror your Fire Tablet screen to your Fire TV:

  1. Swipe down from the top of your tablet, and tap Settings.
  2. Tap Display or Display and Sounds.
  3. Tap Display Mirroring.
  4. Your Fire TV device should be displayed. Select the device and mirroring should start. (Note: it may take up to 20 seconds for mirroring to be successful)
  5. To stop mirroring, select Stop Mirroring on your tablet screen.

Fire TV Mirroring from Android or Apple Devices

Fire TV Mirroring With Android Devices

Amazon Fire TV mirroring is potentially easy with an Android device, if you have the right one. Despite information found online, it is not true that Miracast is enabled in all Android devices with OS 4.2 (Jellybean) or higher. It seems to only be available with certain devices, although this information is not readily available when you are looking to purchase a new device. In order to check if your Android device has Miracast, go to Settings, then Display or Wireless. If you find Miracast in one of these two menus, then your phone is capable. Follow these directions to mirror with your device:

  1. In Settings, go to Display and Sounds or Display.
  2. Then select Enable Display Mirroring.
  3. Your Fire TV device should be displayed. Select the device and mirroring should start. (Note: it may take up to 20 seconds for mirroring to be successful)
  4. To stop mirroring, press any button on your Fire TV remote

Fire TV Mirroring With Apple Devices (and Some Android Devices)

If you own an Apple phone or tablet, or have an Android device without Miracast, you will have to go through a few extra steps before you are able to mirror on the Fire TV. You will need to install a wireless display app, of which there are several. A few things to keep in mind when choosing is if the app will work with your device and the cost. For instance, Reflector 2 works with Apple devices but not Android (and costs $6.99). Air Receiver works with both devices and is only $2.99 (and is rated higher on Amazon than Reflector 2). Assuming you selected and installed Air Receiver from Amazon on your Fire TV, here is how you would use it on your Apple device (the same general process should work with Android):

  1. Enable Air Receiver and check the AirPlay option on the app.
  2. When AirPlay is enabled, your Fire TV should be visible on the list of options.
  3. From here, you can select your Fire TV, and turn on mirroring.
